Underground Storage Tank Removal

Project Overview

McMahon Services were engaged by Spotless Limited to undertake the underground storage tank (UST) removal at Brompton Primary School, South Australia.

The project site was located on school property, however was in a disused part of the grounds in a car park situated next to old tennis courts. The project scope included the following:

  • Removal and disposal of existing pavement;
  • Excavation of site to expose UST;
  • Excavation of material and stockpile approximately 240 tonne of potentially contaminated material;
  • Pump liquid from tank utilising our Hydro-Excavation Vacuum Unit;
  • Degas tank;
  • Remove tank utilising 12 tonne excavator;
  • Dispose of tank via crane truck and dispose of at an appropriate receiving facility, and provide destruction certificates;
  • Dispose of potentially contaminated material;
  • Bulk fill excavations with certified clean quarry material, approximately 900 tonne;
  • Fill in excavations in compacted layers, totalling 320 tonne;
  • Reinstate the site.

The team utilised the use of a remote control trench compactor to compact the backfill material. Trench compactors are suitable for work in confined areas, on difficult to compact soils and on projects where a risk of over-turning is high.
